Local Election Candidates pledge support for a new secondary school in Dublin 8

Ahead of the 2024 local elections, we emailed all candidates in the South West Inner City area and sitting councillors in Ballyfermot Drimnagh to ask for their support with our campaign. We emailed everyone 5 key questions regarding the under provision of secondary education in Dublin 8 and how they can help us to achieve our primary aim of a new secondary school for the area. Please see all responses in the attached spreadsheet.

On top of this, three candidates reached out to meet us face to face to pledge their support with actions and practical advice.

Cclr Máire Devine (Sinn Féin) met with us and offered us great advice based on her activism in getting Griffith Barracks MDS set up 30 years ago. She has emailed potential site owners and provided us with contacts for many others. She has brought our campaign to the awareness of Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Sorcha Clark who has offered to create a topical motion for us in the Dáil.

Zoe Obeheimen (Ind) met with us and has been very vocal in voicing her support. As a mother of 4 kids, the topic is very important to her. She continues to contact the Dept of Education on our behalf and identify potential sites.

Cclr Sophie Nicoullaud (Right to Change) met with us along with Deputy Joan Collins. As advocates for secular inclusive education, they are firmly behind our campaign. They offered lots of practical advice and are strongly advocating for services (such as secondary education) to be provided ahead of the proposed city edge development.

We had a very positive phone conversation with Ammar Ali (FF) who along with Senator Catherine Ardagh is working hard to secure us a meeting with Minister Norma Foley. As father to a young child and having attended secondary school in D8 himself, the issue is very close to his heart.

We have met with Cclr Michael Pidgeon (GP) on numerous occasions. One of the instigators of the campaign he remains extremely focused on our campaign and along with Deputy Costello, on bringing attention to our cause.

Senators Mary Seery Kearney (FG) and Rebecca Moynihan (Lab) (neither currently running for election) have met with us multiple times and continue to be a great source of support.
